Hillhouse believes innovation can fundamentally improve people’s lives and that science fuels innovation. Driven by this belief, the firm supports The Future Science Prize Program, awarding $1 million to each of the program’s three prizes every year.
Hillhouse’s philanthropic efforts support a wide range of activities in education and the arts and sciences.
Hillhouse founder Lei Zhang is a Westlake University founding donor and played a key role in its establishment. Founded in April 2018, the private, internationally-oriented research university contributes to the development of higher education and scientific research in China.
In 2017, Hillhouse gave RMB 300 million to establish the Renmin University Hillhouse Academy Education Development Fund. The fund helps the university develop its global competitiveness, helps its students become innovative global citizens, and offers long-term financial support to its newly established innovative interdisciplinary departments.
As part of Hillhouse’s deep commitment to supporting innovation in education, the firm backed the BN Education Conference, an event first organized by the BN Vocational School in 2014. The conference promotes innovative reforms in vocational education and teaching and fosters exchanges among vocational education professionals.
The Hillhouse Academy is dedicated to cultivating future entrepreneurs and leaders with interdisciplinary talents. It provides outstanding students with an expansive, individualized growth platform that is complementary to the classroom experience.
In 2010, Hillhouse donated $8.9 million to Yale University to support the construction of the Yale School of Management’s new campus, as well as scholarships and funds that enable educational activities promoting exchanges between Yale and China. Hillhouse founder Lei Zhang is a Yale University alum.
The 107 Scholarship is the first program of its type in Zhumadian, Henan. It is funded by alumni, including Lei Zhang, and was founded by the school’s alumni association. The scholarship awards outstanding graduating high school seniors to encourage and support their future educational endeavors.
Hillhouse believes that everyone in society should have the opportunity to succeed. The firm provides long-term financial support to the BN Vocational School, the first free non-profit vocational school in China, and helped found the Zhengzhou BN Hillhouse Vocational School in Henan Province.
